Category: Infinity Monthly Review

Well this is quite an awesome month for new models, including at least four new profiles! As in previous months I will rate the models using the “Schreiber scale” (basically between 1 and 5, with 5 being the highest).

12019999_10153303981353842_6415181698038191668_n
I am going to start with my personal favorite for this month, the Mobile Brigada box set! There are two new profiles added by this box, the Mobile Brigada with Missile Launcher and the Mobile Brigada Hacker. Both of these are fantastic options for these dependable, even if not flamboyant, heavy infantry. The missile launcher is going a add a very resilient ARO option for Nomads, even more so when linked with other Mobile Brigada.

The Hacker however is even more interesting in my eyes, as it’s the first truly resilient Nomad specialist i.e. one with 2 wounds and good armor. This is something I have always felt missing from Nomads, so it’s great to see that gap filled. Interestingly the Mobile Brigada Hacker is the first Hacker (to the best of my knowlegde) that can benefit from a Tinbot (as part of a link). This makes the Mobile Brigada Hacker extremely well protected in the cybernetic arena, even more so if you can use fairly dust as well! I will have to check exactly how all these rules combine and interact, but I think this could be a more deadly hacker than it initially seems. This does raise the questions of, where is the Mobile Brigada with combi-rifle and Tinbot? Personally I am hoping that this will be another blister pack further down the line.

The models themselves look fantastic, up to the same high standard as the Operation Icestorm Mobile Bridaga. I really like the female Mobile Bridaga, they really have a strong manga look to them. There is no doubt that I will be picking this box set up, so I give it a 5.

The Nisse with HMG is an absolutely devastating model on the table, being almost as nasty as an Intruder but far cheaper. The new miniature is undoubtedly finely sculpted with crisp detail. However the pose misses the mark and lets this model down. Not only does the pose makes the Nisse look caught off guard, but holding the HMG in one hand seems unrealistic. I am sure there are potential conversions to fix the pose, but I have to give this model a 2. This may be harsh, as the sculpt really is nice, but I can’t get past that pose!

12006294_10153303980348842_5966356273622145014_n
The Hunzakut is a stunning miniature with an unusual pose, but one that works really well. I know the art work for this model has been around for a while, so it’s great to see it executed to a high standard. For me the model get a strong 4. I can see most Haqq players will want to pick this model up, both because it’s an amazing miniature but also it has a very interesting profile.

12032995_10153303982703842_8563074802858323617_n
The Combined Army has been going in a completely new direction and the Drones are no exception. These have an almost Star Ship Troop bug feel to them, which I like a lot. The Drones also fit in far more with the standard four legged remotes of the Infinity universe. My only criticism is that they feel a bit busy and some parts are hard to identify, but this may be the paint job (awesome as it is) being quite dark. Overall I give these models a solid 4.

As for the rules, Combined Army players can rejoice as they finally get an EVO repeater! EVO’s are soon set to change dramatically (with the re-release of Human Sphere), but in the meantime these will notably provide benefits to Combined Army hackers and Ariel Deployment troops. The latter is especially important for Combined Army, as they have an excellent selection of Ariel Deployment troops. It’s also worth noting that the EVO models looks to have a gun, which I believe is the first EVO model to posses a firearm. Of course you can always build the fearsome Q Drone as well!

12049413_10153303983043842_6715651871048135559_n

The Kosuil Assault Pioneers are an entirely new Tohaa unit. The first release has a K1 combi rifle which will be a great addition to Tohaa, especially for ITS missions that benefit from anti-material weapons (such as Lifeblood, Nimbus Zone, The Armoury etc). The model should be pretty resilient as well, being medium infantry with symbiont armor. It will certainly be interesting to see the full profile of this new model.

The sculpt is solid, although with all those tubes it does somehow remind me of of Bane from old Batman Cartoons! The fist bump pose will annoy some people, but I think it works with this model. I particularly like the coat and that the models looks dramatically different to other Tohaa models, so I give this model a solid 4.

This month is heavily dominated by eagerly anticipated Operation Icestorm. There are however two further releases, including a new Tohaa model and (possibly) the best Samurai Biker you have ever seen! Ok there is not much competition for such models, but hey it really does look cool! As in previous months I will rate the models using the “Schreiber scale” (basically between 1 and 5).

Yojimbo

I feel this sculpt really lives up to the hype, as it is one very cool ronin on a bike! The bike itself is closer in style to the limited edition Penthesilea and Kum rider bikes than the current Yu Jing bikes. I suppose this is just the way CB are taking their bikes these days, it certainly looks nice and fills out it’s large base. The Crazy Kolas are the same as previously released, which I am happy about as they are cool (if very comical) models. Interestingly you get a dismounted Yojimbo model, which I think is really down to Infinity forums users demanding it! Thankfully it’s actually very playable, as Yojimbo is a close combat master so may well need to get off his bike to reach some opponents (also mean he can dodge a lot better!).

Yojimbo

Yojimbo

Yojimbo is a mercenary, so can be played by any non-alien army, although in ITS he is restricted to the Japanese Sectorial Force. Yojimbo is a close combat specialist and can certainly pack a punch, but more importantly he can get quickly himself into combat with smoke grenades and his high movement value. To further aid Yojimbo survivability he has no-wound incapacitation, although his low armor means he won’t want to take to many hits and certainly has to watch out for viral and shock attacks.

On the flip side Yojimbo is far from great at ranged combat, with only a contender and nanopulser. The contender only has a burst of 1, which combined with Yojimbo average BS is not a great offensive weapon but can be handy when is comes to ARO’s. The nanopulser is more situational but if your opponent clumps up, they may get a nasty surprise! Still shooting (other than smoke) is not Yojimbo strength.

I would certainly like to own and use Yojimbo and hope to pick the model(s) up. I doubt he will survive many games and I feel he could be order intensive, but also a lot of fun! As I play Nomads I can use Yojimbo as as a mercenary (in non-ITS games), or at the very least a cool painting project. As such I have to give his model a 5!

Kotail Mobile Unit

The Tohaa range expands with the new Kotail. I think this is a very solid sculpt, with a cool gunslinger pose. The model has the fantastic level of detail, as seen across the whole Tohaa range. I really like the hood and mask on the model, it makes him look cool and sinister at the same time! The Kotail is not a model that I would pick up just to own, but I do like it a lot so will give a score of 4.

Kotail

Kotail

Looking at the stats, the Kotail lives up to it’s name of Mobile Unit, with a high moment value of 6-4 and super jump. The model also has holo projector level 2, which is such a great flexible and fun special rule. The holo projector will allow you to conceal your Kotail as different Tohaa model (allowing for all sorts of mind games!), or provide protection by having holo echoes which will hopefully take a bullet instead of the real Kotail. The Kotail is not lacking in firepower, with access to duel comi rifles, boarding shotgun or spitfire!

The Kotail has symbiont armor, which provides an extra wound. However there is a significant drawback in losing the symbiont armor, as this gives the mobility and holo projector to the model. Still it’s better to be less effective but still be on your feet, rather than unconscious!

Operation Icestorm

Onto the main event of this month, it is of course the new two player starter set. This is such a big release for CB and one which deserves it’s own dedicated review. As soon as I get the box set I will write up a full blog post on Operation Icestorm, it is however safe to say I am very excited about this release!

Operation Icestorm

Operation Icestorm

Here is my (almost) monthly review and ramblings on the latest Inifnity releases. As in previous months I will rate the models using the “Schreiber scale” (basically between 1 and 5).

Antipodes

It’s the re-sculpts that these models deserved and what a fantastic job Corvus Belli have done! I really like how they look are obviously wolf like, but retain an alien proportion in the head. From a fluff perspective you can see why these would give the colonizers of Ariadna issues!

Antipode Assault Pack

Antipode Assault Pack

The three Antipodes are all based of the same computer generated sculpt and then repositioned, which is pretty amazing when you consider how varied the poses are. I think these are the stars of the the month and easily get a 5. In fact at the very least I want to buy one Antipode, even though I don’t play Ariadna. However these are the sort of models that make you want to start a new faction, perhaps something new for me in 2015?

On the table antipodes are a fearsome sight as they are very fast and can easily gang up on people in combat. There camo also allows them to get across the table safely, although the controller can use her smoke launcher if needed (if she is not hiding somewhere!). Antipodes also have the sensor ability, which allows them to detect hidden troops and reveal camo markers. This is a great way to avoid any nasty surprises, as well as to help mitigate for the lack of MSV2/3 in Ariadna. Basically if you play vanilla Ariadna, you should pick these up!

Raktorak

Morat players have another Raktorak to play with, this time armed with the best shot gun in the game! The Vulcan shotgun profile is already playable, but looks to have a major boast in 3rd as it will receive a mighty +6 bonus within 8″.

Raktorak

The model itself is really dynamically posed, portraying a lot of aggression and strength. In fact I slightly prefer this model to the one in the starter box, but I rate both a 5 on the “Schreiber” scale. It will only be a matter of time until I pick this new Raktorak up!

The only downside to having two amazing Raktorak models, is that there is currently only one Suryat model to link with! Linking with heavy infantry is what really make Raktorak stand out, so they will become more useful once we see more Suryat sculpts or perhaps even the eagerly awaited Kornak Gazarot!

Ghulam Special Weapon Pack

Ghulams are the generic line troop of the Haqqislam, playable in both vanilla are the current two sectorials. As such this weapon pack is a great bonus to all Haqqislam players.

Ghulam

The models themselves are very crisp and clean. I would however say that they do not have as much character as the current Ghulams with rifles. Because of this I will rate the new Ghulam pack a 4 as although they are fantastic, they are not so amazing that I have to buy them.

Thamiris

After seeing the artwork for Thamiris I was very excited to see the model. Unfortunately I feel that the art work set my expectations so high, that this model really feels like it has fallen short. In fact I plain don’t like this model, so i am going to have to give it my first 1. It feels really harsh to rate the model so lowly, but I think it is below the standard that I expect from Corvus Belli.

Thamiris

Even if you agree with my rating of this model, I am sure it will still sell well. This is because it has some very interesting rules. First off Thamiris is a fantastic hacker with a high will power and decent BTS. What really sets him apart is that he has markers, so can shoot deployable repeaters. This allows Thamiris to safely extend his hacking influence across the table. That said Thamiris is not completely unarmed for combat either, as he has a very nice assault pistol. This does mean that Thamiris will not want to get into any long range firefight (and by that I mean over 8″!), but why should he when he can safely hack using his repeaters? To top it off Thamiris even has no wound incapacitation. All this and Thamiris is only 29pts!

Zuyong Invincible

I’ll admit that I know very little about this model, but I do know it looks amazing!

zuyong invincible

I really like the style Corvus Belli are taking with this Heavy Infantry. Apparently the design is based on Sun Tzu. This is yet another example of why computer aided sculpting is so amazing. As soon as one model is created it can be used as a template for other models in the range, which will instantly share the same great aesthetics

This model has been done to a very high standard, so I have to give it a 4. I am very keen to see what other models comes out for the new sectorial this model will belongs to.

Next months Infinity releases have now all been previewed and what a great month it will be!

July's Infinity Releases

July’s Infinity Releases

Following on from last month, I thought I would use the “Schreiber scale” to give ratings from 1 to 5 to next months releases.

Ghazi-Muttawiah

Haqqislam players rejoice, the Muttawiah have been redone! These have gone from one of the worse models in Infinity to being an excellent example of how high the quality is with Infinity models.

Muttawiah

Muttawiah

I really like the fact that the jammers are clearly on the mdoels. The female Muttawiah with the opened jammers is probably my favorite of the bunch. I have to give this box a 4, although it’s so close to a 5 as these models are making me consider starting Haqqislam!

Ghazi-Muttawiah

Ghazi-Muttawiah

On the table Muttawiah can be very dangerous and are dirt cheap. They are armed with short ranged shoot guns or chain rifles, so expect them to get close to do damage. In addition the Muttawiah are armed with non lethal, but non the less devastating equipment, the jammer and E/Marat. The E/Marat cuases EM damage, so is great for shutting down the opponents weapons, heavy infantry and even TAGs! The jammer is perhaps even more dangerous as it changes troops from regular to irregular, causing order pools to dry up and link teams to break down. The only downside I can see is that although Muttawiah act like warband (i.e. are cheap but have a short threat range), they do not have smoke grenades, so closing the gap between the Muttawiah and their target may prove tricky.

Ariadna Scout

The Ariadna Scout is a solid, if a bit standard model. If anything I find this model a bit flat. This may be down to my like for more “eccentric” models, but I can’t get too excited about this sculpt. On the other hand the scout sculpt is still the higher than usual standard of Corvus Belli, so I will give the model a score of 2.

Ariadna-Scouts

Ariadna-Scouts

Nikoul

The Nikoul is yet another sniper, but this time a sapper with a viral sniper rifle. The model is very cool, as most the sappers are. As well as being a sapper the Nikoul is (supposed) to have mines, symbiotic armor and MSV1. The Nikoul stats have yet to be released, but with this list of skills I am sure it will be a hit with Tohaa players.

Nikoul

Nikoul

I really like the fact that the model actual has mines. The symbiotic armor is also very well sculpted, especially the face. I am going to give the model a score of 4, as it’s a great quality sculpt that I would love to paint up.

Agema Sniper

The last sniper for this month (is this Corvus Belli hinting that snipers are going to get better?!) is the Agema Sniper. This Agema looks so much better than the existing missile launcher Agema. I really like the models sneaky pose and the visor (the model has MSV2 after all). I score the Agema a 3 as I like the model, but I don’t think there is anything mind blowing about it.

Agema Sniper

Agema Sniper

Morat Suryat

I think Corvus Belli saved the best till last! The Suryat continues the trend of the re-sculpted Morats looking absolutely stunning. I particularly like the Suryats helmet, the horns make it look very impressive. In my opinion there is nothing I dislike about the pose or sculpt, so you may not be surprised that I give the Suryat a solid 5. The fact that I will be buying this model as soon as it’s released means I will live up to giving that score!

Suryat

Suryat

On the table I have used Suryats and had great results. The Suryat are certainly expensive, but being hevay infantry with access to HMG they are very deadly. What really makes the Suryat stand out from other heavy infantry is it’s impressive BTS of -6. This is particularly important when playing Morats Aggression Force, as their choice of defensive hackers is terrible. Of course if you face viral or EM weapons the BTS of -6 is once again highly valued. A nice option for the Suryat with HMG is that it can be your lieutenant as well, which is a very Morat way of thinking. After all the guy with the biggest gun and armor is likely to be leading!

I am looking certainly looking forward to what comes out next for the Morats, as I am sure it will be great!

The next batch of Infinity models are now up for preview!

infinity June Releases

infinity June Releases

For a bit of fun I thought I’d rate the releases using the “Schreiber scale”, which is used on MayaCast and older episodes of O-12. The “Schreiber scale” gives a quantitative and slightly more objective means of rating models. Plus  it’s fun to compare what I think against the pocast! For more information, the scale is below.

1 Only if I have to, and even then…. – You don’t care for the sculpt and would only get it if you played the faction and couldn’t do without it.
2 It’s good enough to play – The model is nice and average.
3 Standards, you’ve got to have standards. – They hit their usual stride with this sculpt. Imaginative, neat, and asking for paint.
4 That’s what I’m talking about! – Gorgeous model that is doing something new. A must own for a faction you play. Cannot wait to get your hands on it.
5 Shut up and take my money already! – You would buy this model just to own it, even if it would never hit the table. If you played the faction, multiples would be in order even if you cannot play multiples. A crown jewel of the Infinity line of figures.

Without further ado, onto the models!

Knights of Santiago

The Knights of Santiago are a box set for Pan-O, Military Order. The box includes two new sculpts, as well as a re-package of two existent sculpts. Being the decent people that they are, Corvus Belli have also released the two new sculpts as a blister pack. So players that already have the existent sculpts can update their collection with ease. I think these are very cool Knight models, with swords swinging and guns blazing! I have to give these models a 4 as the models simply look fantastic and they pull off their dynamic poses. If  I collected Pan-O Military Order, I would be really excited!

Knights of Santiago

Interventors and Fast Pandas

The Interventors are the first of the re-sculpted Tunguska range. In addition to the re-sculpted Interventors, there are the new fast pandas! I still think the names sucks, but the actual models look cool. I know some people may find the anime inspired animal robots too much, but I personally like this funky and fun side of the Nomads. With new models we will see new rules soon. If the rumors are true the fast pandas will be cheap repeater remotes which will allow the Interventors, which are amazing hackers, to extend their hacking threat range. As a Nomad player I am really excited about the new Interventors sculpts, as well as the new fast pandas and have to give the box set a 5! That’s right “shut up and take my money already “!

Interventors

Spetsnaz

The Spetsnaz is a new model for Ariadna, which will have a new profile soon (in fact this model should have a skirmisher profile and an airborne deployment profile). The model may not be overly fancy, but it’s certainly a very solid human sniper model. In particular I like the goggles. I give this model a 3 (which is probably a bit lower than most would give it) as although the model is a very solid human sniper, I just can’t get too excited about a human sniper!

Spetsnaz

Spetsnaz

O-12 High Commissioner

The O-12 High Commissioner is an interesting addition to this months release. If rumors are true it will be civilian model used in specific missions and scenarios. I think this model can add a lot of character to your games of Inifnity by using non-combat personnel. As for the sculpt I give this model a 2 as it’s up to the usual high standards of  Corvus Belli, but I think there are a few better civilian models from the dire foe packs.

An O-12 High Commissioner

An O-12 High Commissioner

Raiden Seibutai

The new Raiden Seibutai model is armed with a heavy rocket launcher. As far as I am aware this is the only model capable of making a camo attack (even if only once!) with a  heavy rocket launcher, which is a fearsome prospect! The model itself is very similar to the currently available Raiden with spitfire, but it’s pose seems slightly off to me. In fact the model looks slightly surprised, which is ironic considering the model has camo (maybe it’s just been discovered?)!  Due to the pose, I am only going to give the model a 3.

Raiden

Raiden

With my review please keep in mind that it’s just my opinion. Also I collect Nomads and the Combined Army, so personally prefer more funky and unusual models!
