On the Inifnity forum, Micro Art Studio have shown a sneak peak of their upcoming Infinity gaming mat. Check out the images below!

Micro Art Studio Gamming Mat

Micro Art Studio Gamming Mat

I have never really made terrain, so the idea of just buying a mat to game on sounds perfect! There are other mats around, but I have never really liked the way they look. Either the mats have been too grungy (probably designed for 40k) or too modern. In my opinion the gaming mat by Micro Art Studio fits the cleaner sci-fi style that I associate with Infinity.

I will admit that I am also keen on this mat because  all of my terrain is produced by Micro Art Studio, so will fit in perfectly. This is particularly important as the mat has spaced specifically designed to fit the  Micro Art Studio buildings from the Designed for Infinity range. There is no doubt that having places specifically to place buildings will be restrictive, hopefully this won’t impact on games.  The only other downside is that some sections of road, could create long fire lanes. I plan on putting a gate along the middle of the long stretches of road, which will block line-of sight. However I am over all really excited with how the mat looks.

I am keen to know when the mat will be released and for how much. I am sure I will be picking one up!

The New Marksmanship Skill

It’s unusual to get a rule leaked by Corvus Belli, but apparently Bell of Lost Souls has information on the new marksmanship skill. The marksmanship skill will be used by the new Spetsnaz unit, but also hints to the possible future for snipers in the upcoming third edition of Infinity.

Spetsnaz

Spetsnaz

I am taking this leak with a pinch of salt, but it’s interesting none the less. Anyway, the new rule looks like this:

Marksmanship Level 1

A model with this special skill will treat all BS weapons with a damage rating as though they are firing Shock Ammunition.
The Shock Special Ammunition provided by Marksmanship can be combined with any other special ammunition loaded by the BS Weapon. However, this special skill cannot be applied to non-leathal weapons (i.e. smoke grenade launchers, flash pulse, etc).

Marksmanship Level 2

When a model with Marksmanship level 2 declares a BS Attack (regardless of the weapon being lethal), the model can ignore the -3 modification to their BS Attribute when the opponent is behind partial cover. The two level stack as usual for Infinity.

What’s The Verdict?

On the table this means that the Spetsnaz will have shock amo (great for putting enemy’s with No Wound Incapacitation down!), plus ignore the ballistic skill penalty for cover.  This will greatly improve the accuracy and killing power of the Spetsnaz. This is the first time I have seen a rule that specifically ignores cover (when rolling to hit anyway), which is a massively important in Infinity. As such, I have no doubt that this will be a very deadly rule!

If more models with sniper rifles get this rule we could see a greater balance between them and HMGs, which are often preferred. This is of course wild speculation, but it’s always fun to see hints of what the third edition of Infinity might include!

The next batch of Infinity models are now up for preview!

infinity June Releases

infinity June Releases

For a bit of fun I thought I’d rate the releases using the “Schreiber scale”, which is used on MayaCast and older episodes of O-12. The “Schreiber scale” gives a quantitative and slightly more objective means of rating models. Plus  it’s fun to compare what I think against the pocast! For more information, the scale is below.

1 Only if I have to, and even then…. – You don’t care for the sculpt and would only get it if you played the faction and couldn’t do without it.
2 It’s good enough to play – The model is nice and average.
3 Standards, you’ve got to have standards. – They hit their usual stride with this sculpt. Imaginative, neat, and asking for paint.
4 That’s what I’m talking about! – Gorgeous model that is doing something new. A must own for a faction you play. Cannot wait to get your hands on it.
5 Shut up and take my money already! – You would buy this model just to own it, even if it would never hit the table. If you played the faction, multiples would be in order even if you cannot play multiples. A crown jewel of the Infinity line of figures.

Without further ado, onto the models!

Knights of Santiago

The Knights of Santiago are a box set for Pan-O, Military Order. The box includes two new sculpts, as well as a re-package of two existent sculpts. Being the decent people that they are, Corvus Belli have also released the two new sculpts as a blister pack. So players that already have the existent sculpts can update their collection with ease. I think these are very cool Knight models, with swords swinging and guns blazing! I have to give these models a 4 as the models simply look fantastic and they pull off their dynamic poses. If  I collected Pan-O Military Order, I would be really excited!

Interventors and Fast Pandas

The Interventors are the first of the re-sculpted Tunguska range. In addition to the re-sculpted Interventors, there are the new fast pandas! I still think the names sucks, but the actual models look cool. I know some people may find the anime inspired animal robots too much, but I personally like this funky and fun side of the Nomads. With new models we will see new rules soon. If the rumors are true the fast pandas will be cheap repeater remotes which will allow the Interventors, which are amazing hackers, to extend their hacking threat range. As a Nomad player I am really excited about the new Interventors sculpts, as well as the new fast pandas and have to give the box set a 5! That’s right “shut up and take my money already “!

Spetsnaz

The Spetsnaz is a new model for Ariadna, which will have a new profile soon (in fact this model should have a skirmisher profile and an airborne deployment profile). The model may not be overly fancy, but it’s certainly a very solid human sniper model. In particular I like the goggles. I give this model a 3 (which is probably a bit lower than most would give it) as although the model is a very solid human sniper, I just can’t get too excited about a human sniper!

O-12 High Commissioner

The O-12 High Commissioner is an interesting addition to this months release. If rumors are true it will be civilian model used in specific missions and scenarios. I think this model can add a lot of character to your games of Inifnity by using non-combat personnel. As for the sculpt I give this model a 2 as it’s up to the usual high standards of  Corvus Belli, but I think there are a few better civilian models from the dire foe packs.

Raiden Seibutai

The new Raiden Seibutai model is armed with a heavy rocket launcher. As far as I am aware this is the only model capable of making a camo attack (even if only once!) with a  heavy rocket launcher, which is a fearsome prospect! The model itself is very similar to the currently available Raiden with spitfire, but it’s pose seems slightly off to me. In fact the model looks slightly surprised, which is ironic considering the model has camo (maybe it’s just been discovered?)!  Due to the pose, I am only going to give the model a 3.

With my review please keep in mind that it’s just my opinion. Also I collect Nomads and the Combined Army, so personally prefer more funky and unusual models!

Infinity Terrain

These days there is a wealth of terrain made specifically for Infinity. The vast majority of the terrain is MDF, but there are other materials used such as hard foam, plastics and resin. It’s worth looking around to see what terrain you like the look of, how user friendly it is and of course how much it will set you back.  After all if you want a full table of terrain, the cost soon adds up!

Having so many manufactures of terrain you have a great deal of choice, but with choice comes hard decisions. For example would you be better off using Micro Art or Bandua scenery? Do you go for practical gaming use over visual looks? Well it’s tricky to get an overview of the benefits and negatives of all the different manufactures, mainly because most people (in my experience) don’t purchase from multiple manufactures. Well to help you, MiniWargaming have produced a video series. Its well worth checking this video series out, as it covers the major Infinity terrain manufactures Micro Art StudioBandua and Warsenal.

I would add to the comments made in the video by saying that the prices do vary a lot. In my opinion the most expensive manufacture is Warsenal, then Micro Art Studio and finally Bandua.

I would also like to point out two other manufactures of terrain that were not reviewed in the video. The fist is Plast Craft Games who produce a fantastic Haqq style terrain range, in plastic of course. Plast Craft Games also produce a more Pan-O style terrain, but I am not so keen of the look of these. Unfortunately I have not played on this terrain, so I can’t say how user friendly it is.

The second manufacture not mentioned is Spartan Games. This terrain system uses corridors, which sets it apart from the other manufactures. I have played on this terrain and have really enjoyed how much you use the interior of the buildings. This adds a whole new dimension to the game. Considering you can fill a 4 x 4 table with the starter set alone, this terrain is great value for money. The only downside in my opinion is that the MDF is only sealed on one side, which is a real shame.

Spartan Games

I certainly think it’s worth shopping around and reading reviews to get the terrain  that suits your taste and requirements. After all one of the best aspects of Infinity is seeing a board full of  great looking terrain!

EDIT:

I noticed that there are more videos now in the video series and one is even Plast Craft Games!  The other terrain manufacture is Systema Gaming. I don’t have any experience with Systema Gaming so can’t comment on there products, apart from that they seem to have some cool acrylic pieces.

I mostly agree with the last video in the series, where Matt from Mini wargaming goes through the pros and cons. Well worth a listen!

With the release of the new Wood Elf book I decided to re-visit my old collection and the game of Warhammer Fantasy.

I have not played Warhammer Fantasy for many years (probably over 5), but did enjoy it “back in the day”.  As I  own a decent sized painted Wood Elf force, I thought I would take the “risk” and buy the new army book. When you consider how much money and time it would take to start a Warhammer army from scratch, purchasing the Army Book to find out if I still enjoyed the game seemed like a small risk.

Wood Elves

Wood Elves

I have always enjoyed the background of the wood elves and the new book provides even more fluff than before. I really like how the Wood Elves are neither wholly evil or good, but they are far from neutral! Instead a Wood Elf can be as noble as a High Elf, or as wicked as a Dark Elf. This is reflected perfectly in the rules by the wizards having access to both high and dark magic.

The relationship between the forest spirits and the elves has also been fleshed out. I particularly like the story around the Treeman Elder Coeddil, who was imprisoned by the elves after he tried to kill off Orion (he went a bit mental!). The fluff goes on to show how Drycha collected artifacts and used them to unchain Coeddil. This is the sort of background that can inspire an entire unique army!

Game wise, from what I have heard (from podcasts) and read (from blogs) the new Wood Elves look to be a balanced army book where the vast majority of units are playable. If any units suffered it’s probably the Dryads and Treekin, who have notably have been reduced in strength. The winners are probably the Waystalkers, Wild Riders and Waywatchers. However it’s still early days since the release of the army book, so I suspect much of what I have heard is simply theory.

I have already repaired my Wood Elf army, as bits were been broken during their long “hibernation”. I am looking forward to giving Warhammer Fantasy a go again, hopefully I will enjoy it once more!
