Infinity 3rd Edition

So the big April announcement, hinted at over the last few months, was in fact regarding the 3rd edition of Infinity. In addition there were previews of new models as well as re-sculpts.

It’s safe to say that I am very excited about a 3rd edition of Infinity. I hope that there are no major changes to the game mechanics, as I feel the game is incredibly enjoyable and the system is balanced. However as much as I like the game I can’t dispute that the translation of the rule book is less than perfect, making the rules both difficult to read and sometimes ambiguous. The Infinity wiki and forums can quickly resolve many of these rule issue, however this involves extra effort on the player to find the information. This is fine for a player like myself who is very keen on the system, however I have heard that it’s been a reason for new players to give up the game. As Infinity has undergone rapid expansion in the last few years, in particular globally, a better translated rule book with cleaner rules would certainly encouraging the uptake of the game.

As to the previews of models, we have some (blurry) images to see some upcoming releases. As a Nomad and Combined Army player I am very excited to see that there will be new units coming soon.

 Nomad Interventors

Nomad Interventors

Not only are the Nomad Interventors getting a re-sculpt, but they will also get some companions in the form of “Fast Pandas” (I hope they are working on a better name!).  Rule wise I suspect these will be cheap remotes that are repeaters, much like a doctors/medics G servant (e.g. Palbot, Slave Drone etc). The new Nomad models validate the rumors that we will see a new Nomad sectorial, from the mother ship Tunguska. Currently there are very few models from Tunguska in the Nomad range, the most notable being the Interventors. Based on the background Tunguska will probably have a good selection of remotes and higher technology than the other Nomad sectorials.

The next really interesting preview for me is a Combined Army EI (Evolved Intelligence)  sectorial. I really like the style they have gone with, as it’s similar to the Ikadron. I hope there are also Sepsitorised humans in the EI sectorial, as I really enjoyed painting Ko Dhali (pictures coming soon!).

EI Unidron

With two new sectorials for Nomads and Combined Army, even though I only collect two armies I will be able to play 6 different sectorials as well as the “vanilla” army. This would give me an impressive selection of 8 different army list to try out, which I am certainly looking to doing!

This is a fantastic article on “30k”. The gaming tables and armies are simply fantastic!

The Painting Bunker

Hello everyone!

Its been ages since my last post and I’ve been anxiously wanting to put this post up for some time.  However due to life etc I’ve not had the time.

Let me assure you, it’ll be well worth your wait.  You’re all in for a very special treat today, the wash up of my 30k Horus Heresy comp that I ran at the beginning of March.  The Emperors Legions.

So a little bit of back ground.  I’ve wanted to run a comp for quite some time, however for many reasons I haven’t.  Mostly due to terrain.  Also, the main reason is I want to run an event.  As some of you reading this know, I’ve been playing 40k since 1st ed, waaaaayyyy back in the late 80’s, early 90’s.  Let me assure you when I say I’ve been to my fair share of comps.  I’ve seen…

The Morats have gone through a complete visual re-design, so I decided to part with my painted army and purchase the new models. Some people may consider this to be OTT, but having out of date models would really bug me! Anyway I really want to paint the new models, as they look awesome.

Sogarat with Feurbach

Sogarat with Feurbach (aka his “boom stick!”)

In the past I based my army around a Yaogat 5 man link team, however I used the refresh of models to try a different style of Morat Aggression Force. In my new list I based the army abound a 5 man Daturazi link, one of which I upgraded to have a combi rifle and explosive close combat weapon. Although this is an expensive upgrade, I thought that the explosive close combat weapon could be handy to deal with more resilient opponents. I had my doubts on the effectiveness of the combi-rifle, due to the Daturazi less than impressive BS of 10 but hopefully the close combat potential would be worth it.

With all the potential smoke  from the Daturazi, I had to include one Yaogat with spitfire to do some nasty MSV2 + smoke combo attacks. I also added a few morat vanguard for more reliable (i.e. less impetuous!) orders. To add some serious fire power and reliance to the army I added a Sogarat lieutenant. I went with the Feuerbach option as it good in defense as well as on the offense.

I had sufficient points to include another combat group, a novelty for the Combined Army! I added the Oznat and four Preta to form a potential link. To take advantage of the orders from this potential Oznat/Preta link, I added a Rasyat with Spitfire.

An issue with the list is the obvious lieutenant (the Sogarat), but then it’s one incredibly hard to kill lieutenant! I feel that this also fits the Morats personality. Other armies may hide their lieutenant with camo or with duplicates of the same model, but Morats can be bold because (in this list anyway) my lieutenant is heavy infantry with an armor value of 6! Anyway here is the full list:

Combat Group #1
 Sogarat Feuerbach Lt (70|2)
 Morat Combi (16|0)
 Morat Combi (16|0)
 Yaogat Spitfire (35|1.5)
 Daturazi Chain (14|0)
 Daturazi Chain (14|0)
 Daturazi Chain (14|0)
 Daturazi Chain (14|0)
 Daturazi EXP CCW (25|0)

Combat Group #2
 Rasyat Spitfire (40|1.5)
 Oznat (21|0)
 Preta Chain (5|0)
 Preta Chain (5|0)
 Preta Chain (5|0)
 Preta Chain (5|0)

I played one game against Steal Phalanx (Alpeh) today to try the force out.

I started the game with the Oznat/Preta linked (I then switched the link team to the Daturazi) and used the now regular orders to get the Rasyat into action. This provided the Rasyat with 5 orders to cause carnage. Unfortunately in this game the Rasyat failed to kill anything, purely because of the ODD and smoke that the Steal Phalanx are renowned for (and hated for!). I still thought that this was an efficient use of cheap orders, so hope to use this tactic more in the future.

Once linked the Daturazi were really quick to get up the field. In addition they were very durable to enemy fire, with sixth sense level 2 and being able to throw two smoke grenades that can hit on an amazing 20 (ph 14 then +3 for full link and +3 for range)! However when it came to killing, I found it incredibly tricky to keep them alive whilst using the chain rifles (although that’s warband troops for you!). I think to keep the Daturazi alive for longer, I might be better off using  coordinated orders to reduce the ARO against them. Using coordinated orders would break the link, but the link seems best for movement or if the burst 2 chain rifle is needed.

I was surprised that the Daturazi with explosive close combat weapon and combi-rifle was surprisingly useful. I did not get into combat, but the actual combi-rifle was worthwhile so long as the link was at 5 models, giving the Daturazi a decent BS of 13. In fact I think main strength of the Daturazi is the ability to get to that magical 5 man link something which their closest counterparts, the myrmidons, can’t do! I would now consider using the Daturazi with light smoke launcher option and combi rifle, as it would be nice o be able to get smoke further up the field. In fact with the full link the Daturazi with light smoke launcher hits on 16 or less within 16″.

I certainly like the more (aptly) aggressive style that I am taking with the  Morat Aggression Force and am looking forward to refining my tactics. In particular making the most of two potential links was tricky, but an interesting different playing experience.
The new Morat models are simply fantastic and have been fun to play with. I am really keen to get them painted up (although I need to do Ko Dhali first!) and on the table again!

Somehow I have been collecting the Combined Army for over a year and had yet to purchase Ko Dali. This is odd as the model is amazing and her rules are quite interesting. However I have recently resolved this issue!

Ko Dali is simply an amazing sculpt that has a great deal of personality. The model had a fair amount of flash,  but did go together quickly. I am really looking forward to getting her painted!

Ko Dali

Ko Dali

What makes Ko Dali such an interesting character (past her awesome stats) is what she represents within the Infinity universe. If you are unaware, originally Ko Dali was a Yu Jing character. During the Paradiso Campaign Ko Dali was thought lost in action, however the truth was far worse. The Combined Army have means of corrupting and possessing cubes (a futuristic device used to record a persons memories) using  a Sepsitor. This was the unfortunate fate of the once celebrated Yu Jing hero, Ko Dali.

Ko Dali

Ko Dali past and present

As interesting as this story is, it shows how the Infinity universe is an evolving story line that concentrates on the future rather than the past. It was a very brave move from Corvus Belli to change the allegiance of a character from one army to another, even braver was changing a human character to the Combined Army. Personally I really like the fact that the background story is progressing and this effects the models you use on the table. This  can also be seen in other rule changes, such as amends to profile (like the Suryats) or additional versions of profiles (such as Sun Tze and Joan of Arc). It also makes the Combined Army more menacing, as even characters are not safe from their corruption!

Ko Dali

As mentioned Ko Dali was Sepsitorised during the Paradiso Campaign.  Paradiso itself was a major step forward in the Infinity background, as it shows the arrival (and subsequent manipulation) of the Tohaa, the major blows to the forces of the Human Sphere  as well as its success. Finally Paradiso sets the scene for the future of the Infinity universe. After Paradiso the Combined Army is now turning  its attention to the  Human Sphere, rather than merely sending an expeditionary force. This is quite interesting as the Combined Army is currently one of the most elite forces in Infinity (probably tied with Aleph), so who knows what the full force of the Combined Army will look like!

There is a rumored massive announcement this month, if this is true we may see another book like Paradiso that contains more of the evolving Infinity story line as well as new models and possibly even more sectorials. This would be fantastic news, but only time will tell!

Shasvastii Force Photos

I managed to take a load of photos of my Shasvastii before the Spring Challenge. I finally got round to cropping the photos, so here they are. I hope you like the pics!
