I often see new players asking what they should buy first to get into Infinity. The large model range can be overwhelming, so the “vanilla” (instead of sectorial) starter sets are often seen as a safe way to get into the game. They are also great value, normally saving you the cost of one model.

There are some considerations on the value of these starter sets. In an effort to aid new players I have rated the starter sets out of five and provided some reasoning behind my score, as well as a brief review of the box contents. If you feel I have under or over scored a starter set, please leave a comment!:)

Haqqislam Starter Pack: 5 out of 5

The set provides approximately 119pts and 0.5 swc. This set including a Janissaire, Hunzakut, Naffatun and three Ghulam.

The Janissaire is the heavy hitter of the list, although he has a fairly standard stat line for heavy infantry. The remainder of the list includes four light infantry (one with a nasty flame thrower!) and a skirmisher (the Hunzakut). As such the set provides a good mix of troops, at a decent number of points. The set even includes a special weapon, the sniper rifle, which is rare for a stater set. What gets this set to a 5 out of  5, is that the models are so finely sculpted.

ALEPH Starter Pack: 5 out of 5

This set has some simply amazing models! The set includes an Asura, Naga, Deva and three Dakini Tacbots. If I had to pick a favorite model, it would be the Deva.

ALEPH Starter Pack

ALEPH Starter Pack

At 172pts this is one of the highest pointed starter sets. The set has a good mix of troops including one heavy infantry, one skirmisher, three remotes (that act like light infantry) and an elite light infantry (the Deva).

If the box has any downsides it’s that it includes remotes, so you need to include a hacker which is not ideal for newer players. In fact my advice for newer players would be to ignore the hacker requirement to field remotes, until you get used to the hacker rules. The only other downside is that the Asura is very expensive, so can unbalance low point games. Even considering these drawback the range of models and quality of sculpts makes this set a fantastic purchase. It gets top marks from me!

Tohaa Starter Pack: 4 out of 5

This is the latest of the “vanilla” starter sets. The set gives 164pts and 0 swc and includes a Ectros, Cilpsos, Sakiel and three Kameal.

Tohaa Starter Pack

Tohaa Starter Pack

The set contains a good mix of one heavy infantry, three light infantry, one skirmisher and an elite light infantry.  Interestingly there are a lot of lieutenant options within this set, as the Ectros, Kameal and Sakiel all good candidates. The models can be used to make one Tohaa fire team, which would be a good way to introduce this game mechanic.

The models are all very nicely sculpted, however I am not a fan of the pose on the Ectros. I have been told that it looks better in person, but going by the photos I am not sold on the sculpt! However overall the quality of the sculpts combined with the variety of troops makes this a solid starter.

Yu Jing Starter Pack: 4 out of 5

The set contains a Shang Ji, Domaru, Celestrial Guard and three Zhanshi. The set is approximately 124pts and 0 swc.

Yu Jing Starter Pack

Yu Jing Starter Pack

This is a solid starter set that has two well priced heavy infantry and four light infantry, which I think is a good mix, altough it would have been nice to include a skirmisher (like the Guilang) to get used to the camo rules.

The Shang Ji is one of  my favorite heavy infantry models in the Infinity game (move 4-4, armour of 4 and light flame thrower!), so well worth using! The Domaru is an interesting heavy infantry model, as it has a short ranged weapon.  Because it’s short threat range the Domaru is very cheap and one of the few models that is good in combat in the Infinity game!

The models are a few years old so are not as finely sculpted as the best Infinity miniatures. However they are still superior to miniatures from many other ranges. This is the only reason I did not give this starter set a 5 out of 5.

Ariadna Starter Pack: 4 out of 5

This set includes three Kazaks, Veteran Kazak, Highlander Grey and a Chasseur. The set provides approximately 121pts and 0 swc.

The Veteran Kazak is on the pricey side (especially for Ariadna) but with no-wound incapacitation, I think he justifies his points. The Highlander Grey will adds some extra aggression to the force, whilst the Chasseur provides stealth. Overall the set looks balanced to me.

As with the Yu Jing starter pack the set is a few years old, so although the models look great they are less fine than the newer Infinity releases.

Pan Oceania Starter Pack: 2 out of 5

The set contains four fusiliers, one Orc Troop and a CrocMan. The set is approximately 113pts and 0 swc.

This set that looks really out dated. In particular the CrocMan is one of the worst Infinity models (I really do not like it!). The fusiliers are ok, but look out dated with their large guns.  In fact the Orc Troop is the only model I particularly like in the set.

The only reason this set did not score lower was that fusiliers are very useful to have and for some reason these are still the current fusilier sculpts.

Combined Army Starter Set: 2 out of 5

The set is approximately 180pts, making it the highest pointed starter set. The set feel unbalanced as it includes one very expensive Charontid, a fairly expensive Malignos and then much cheaper vanguards and a witch soldier.

Combined Army Starter Set

Combined Army Starter Set

This set is getting phased out and with good reason! The set includes some very out dated models, noticeably the morat vanguard which have been recently updated. It won’t be long until the witch soldiers are also updated. Even the Chrontid is a much poorer sculpt than the newer HMG variant. The only model player tend to want is the Malignos, which has dated well.

I think this set has had it’s day and I would avoid buying it, unless you got it for an amazing discount!

Starter Pack Nomads: 2 out of 5

The set provides 111pts and 0 swc. The set includes a Mobile Brigada, Zero, Securitate and three Alguacil. This set is another example of out dated models.  The only model that I would consider buying is the Zero, which although has an awkward pose does have some charm.

Playing wise this box set is not too dissimilar to the Haqqislam starter pack, as it includes a heavy infantry, four light infantry (unfortunately this includes a Securitate, which is considered over priced) and a skirmisher. However the level of the sculpting is worlds apart!
